Reader, writer, tinker, editor, thinker, retailer, dreamer. Irrepressible dictionary. Occasionally does duty as a wise old mother elf in leather.
Some day in the future, when we really do have underwater cities and pollution-free flying cars, I want a holographic business card that reads, "Patty Cryan, Library Lion". One of my earliest Internet handles was "LibraryLion". No, I'm not a librarian. Yes, I'm a bookseller. The most important fact you need to know about me is that I read. A lot. In print and in sequential-art form. I also consume audiobooks and audio dramas like oxygen.
My tastes lean towards "hard" science fiction first and foremost, but I am also quite fond of "soft" science fiction, horror, mystery and fantasy - roughly in that order of enjoyment. I do not delineate between media tie-in works and original fiction; to me, a story is a story is a story. Otherwise, my LJ interests and my entries themselves should give you an idea of what I find appealing.
From A Sylphidine Gallimaufry, my defunct site on Geocities, some more tidbits about me...
"In Whose Pages May Be Found A Sylph Inviolate, Kippers Galore, The Hunting Of The Tarq, Richard Feynman On A Good Day, A Jam Session With John Coltrane, H.P. Lovecraft, And Edward Lear, Some Snippets Of Common Sense, Moon Magic, And Cats Of All Kinds In A Perpetual State Of Brownian Motion.
" 'My Angles Are Many/My Sides Are Not Few'. Thus spake Norton Juster's Dodecahedron. I share his dilemma...I have more interests than could possibly fit upon a single Web Page, so I'll keep it simple on this outing. I am a devotee of raunchy blues guitar and of Appalachian dulcimers, of pipe organs, Fairlights, Stratocasters and Washburns, steel drums, bodhrans and harpsichords. I keep ghostly company with an elegant white longfurred odd-eyed feline rogue and corporeal company with a dark and handsome human comic book dealer who doubles amazingly well as an engineer. I am a kitchen witch, a high-end audiophile, a journeyman Mathemagician, and a children's book expert. I am frequently to be found immersed in my books on astronomy, folklore and mythology, or else my two-volume set of ALL THE WORDS by Monty Python. I am an iron gargoyle in temperament, dyspeptic, sarcastic, and vain. But I have been moved to tears on occasion [just don't tell anyone...I have a reputation to uphold, after all] by the perfect image or written word or phrase of music."
"...[Patty] reads at a prodigious rate and on her nightstand one can usually find three or four books being read simultaneously, covering anything from physics to erotica to science fiction to anthropology to container gardening. There is always music playing in her house...blues, electronic, classical, Eighties dance club, album rock, jazz... Her house, built in 1914, has ghosts, but they seem to be a very merry sort, of the type to be readily caught in the act of 'bending elbows' at Callahan's.... at least the formerly human ghosts. The ghost cats, of course, prefer tuna."
